30 transit leaders, 354 pages, 1 book on the New Future of Transit

It’s a master class on the future of public transport

Paul has written about a book at year since 2020 and this week we’re celebrating the release of his newest one, The New Future of Public Transportation. Like Conversations on Equity and Inclusion in Public Transportation, this book is a collection of essays from today’s top transit leaders and thinkers from around the world. Paul pulled together a Who’s Who from the industry to cover every important topic facing public transit today. Infrastructure, safety, cybercrime, fares, workforce, mental health, zero emissions, and more.

Our podcast episode this week features two of the contributors: Dr. Karen Philbrick, Executive Director of the Mineta Transportation Institute, and Paige Malott, high-speed rail researcher with the International Union of Railways to discuss their chapters and their vision for transit.

Karen dives into not just helping build a stronger, healthier workforce and rebuilding ridership, but also how cybercrime is threatening transit systems worldwide. She details what she covered in her chapter and how these seemingly disparate topics all weave together into a vision for the future of transit.

Paige Malott and Paul talk about one of the biggest questions in rail: Why doesn’t the U.S. have true high-speed rail (true high-speed rail means trains traveling over 186 miles per hour)? It’s not as simple as money or political will or even rail lines, it’s all these factors together that have stymied high-speed rail in the U.S. But Paige talks about how that could change with upcoming projects like Brightline West from LA to Las Vegas.

????️Coming up next week on Transit Unplugged: Andy Lord of TfL

Transport for London (TfL) is one of the world’s biggest public transit systems, so any time you get to talk with the head of TfL, it’s a big deal. Paul sat down with Andy to talk about TfL, its plans for growth, how it will move towards zero emissions, and Andy’s own career path from aviation to The Tube and now Commissioner of TfL.
