What’s best about Kansas City? Food, music, sports, or transit?
❓How do you describe a city that spans two states, is famous for music, food, fountains, and sports in less than 20 minutes⁉️
Ah, the wait is over. Transit Unplugged TV featuring Kansas City is finally out! You’ve heard all about transit in KCK and KCMo (that’s Kansas City, Kansas and Kansas City, Missouri, BTW) with podcast episodes from Kansas City Area Transportation Authority (KCATA) CEO Frank White, III and KC Streetcar Executive Director Tom Gerend, but now you get to see it all for yourself.
From the iconic Union Station–they really don’t make buildings like that anymore–to Gates Bar-B-Q, and even the new international airport, Kansas City is pretty amazing.
In this episode of Transit Unplugged TV you:
- Get a behind the scenes look at KCATA with a tour of their operations
- Ride on the MAX Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) through the city core
- Take the streetcar to the City Market
- Listen to some smokin’ jazz at one of the many music clubs in the city
- Tour the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum
- Learn how RideKC micro transit is connecting people to the entire KCATA network
- And join Paul for lunch with Kansas City Royals baseball legend Frank White, Jr. at Gates Bar-B-Q
All that remains to be seen is whether Austin or KC has better BBQ. But we can’t forget about Memphis coming up in a future episode.
????️Oklahoma City Mayor David Holt puts transit above politics
Mayor David Holt sat down with Paul to talk about transit in his city and the 20-year transit plan his predecessor started and he is continuing at full throttle. Unlike a lot of the big transit plans we tell you about, David is doing something different.
To make sure he wins over residents–and taxpayers–he’s launching smaller projects over time to bring the city’s transit vision to life. His plans for light rail are a prime example of this. Instead of mapping out an entire, city-wide LRT network, he’s focusing on a single North-South route that connects his biggest suburbs to downtown.
Show the value, win the hearts, get the riders, then expand. Sounds very smart to all of us.
