TNCs help keep paratransit running smoothly
TNCs help agencies deliver better, more flexible paratransit services
Transportation Network Companies (TNCs) have been playing a huge role in the new era of transit. They’re powering on-demand transit, expanding the reach of transit systems, and revolutionizing paratransit.
Paratransit is, far and away, the most expensive service any transit agency can offer. And as the population ages, we’re going to need more and more access to paratransit. So how is that going to work?
TNCs let agencies be more flexible and adjust to spikes in demand without degrading the service or needing to expand their own operator pool. TNCs allow for on-demand, same-day travel and fill in when paratransit schedules get upended by delays. TNCs let agencies offer more (and better) paratransit service within their existing budgets.
All good things we think.

This is the second episode sponsored by Uber Transit and you’ll hear from three of the leaders in the paratransit space:
♿ Andre Colaiace, Access Services LA
♿ Chris Pangilinan, NY MTA
♿ Eileen Collins Turvey, TriMet (Portland, OR)
They talk with Paul about how they have used TNCs to enhance, improve, and expand paratransit at their agencies.

????️Coming up next week on Transit Unplugged: The critical role transit plays in rural America
Paratransit is a crucial link for our communities, but what if your community spans hundreds of square miles? Transit in rural communities is just as critical as paratransit for people in those areas.
Public transit—and dedicated teams of volunteer drivers—make sure people far from cities and towns can get to medical appointments, shopping, activities, and services. Often in rural areas there are no taxis or other TNCs so people who can’t drive have to rely on friends, family, and transit to get around.
Next week on Transit Unplugged we’ll hear from Brandon Nurmi, Director of Arrowhead Transit in Eastern Minnesota, and how he connects people over tens of thousands of square miles to all the things we can often just walk to in cities.
