Florida has got it all going on in transit

There is a lot more to Florida than alligators, oranges, and hurricanes

We’re putting a spotlight on Florida this week on Transit Unplugged.

First off we have a special episode featuring six of Florida’s top transportation leaders talking about the before, during, and after of dealing with Hurricanes Helene and Milton. Imagine staying in harm’s way to make sure the people in your community could get to shelter. Imagine driving buses in 30+ MPH winds.

Most of us would rather not, but that’s not an option for Floridians during hurricane season (June 1 – November 30, btw). As LYNX CEO Tiffany Homler Hawkins said:

There are two certain things in Florida. It is going to be hot and humid in the summer, and at some point you are going to be doing some type of hurricane prepper response.

For this show Paul interviewed:

  • Brad Miller, CEO of Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority
  • Coree Cuff Lonergan, CEO of Broward County Transit (BCT)
  • Dave Dech, Executive Director of the South Florida Regional Transportation Authority/Tri-Rail
  • Ivan Maldonado, Executive Director of Palm Tran
  • Tiffany Homler Hawkins, CEO of Central Florida Regional Transportation Authority (LYNX)
  • Greg Slater, CEO/Executive Director of the Tampa Hillsborough Expressway Authority

Listen to the whole amazing show and get a behind the scenes look at what it takes to be hurricane ready in Florida.

And coming next week we stay in Florida to talk with one of Mass Transit Magazine’s 40 Under 40 winners, Schneider St. Preux about his career trajectory that started 12 years ago as a bus operator to now be General Superintendent of Bus Operations at Miami-Dade County Department of Transportation and Public Works.

Make sure you follow Transit Unplugged wherever you listen to podcasts to learn what Schneider credits to his success, which may or may not include a certain podcast (ahem).
