The secret to success in your transit career

There are no shortcuts to getting ahead

What does it really take to rise through the ranks in transit?

Just dumb luck? Being in the right place at the right time?

Sure, all of those things help, but they won’t get you far because you can’t count on them.

To get ahead you need three things:

  1. Drive
  2. Hard work
  3. Investing in yourself

This week Paul is talking with someone we could call a Transit Unplugged superfan—Schneider St. Preux—who says he’s listened to every podcast episode and credits Transit Unplugged with helping him in his upward career trajectory.

We’re so pleased to be part of Schneiders’ career journey. As he says in this interview—listening and engaging in our podcast community, along with hard work, determination, and willingness to invest in himself, has taken Schneider from bus operator to General Superintendent of Bus Operations at Miami-Dade.

Schneider is a true success story and one of this year’s Mass Transit Magazine’s 40 Under 40 winners, make sure you tune in to hear his entire story, including the time a passenger tried to steal his bus.

Coming up next week, we focus on a topic close to the hearts of everyone at Transit Unplugged—accessibility. Paul talks with Ron Brooks and Kristen Joyner about their new book which servesas both a guidebook and inspiration for how to make transit, and the wider world, more accessible for everyone.

This Week in Transit News…

One of the biggest issues facing U.S. public transit is the bus manufacturing crisis. There aren’t enough manufacturers to make the number of zero-emission buses needed for agencies to reach their greenhouse gas reduction goals. One of the hurdles is too much customization.

To help, the L.A. Metro Board of Directors adopted a new policy, which includes coordinating with the other Los Angeles County transit agencies to buy their buses together with reduced customization. Source: LA METRO

Last week, Lane Transit District in Oregon held a “State of the District” event. One of their goals is for the community to try a transit or mobility option for one roundtrip each month, for a year. Source: Lane Transit District

And the Utah Transit Authority was having issues with the lifespan of the external bus speakers that they use for ADA announcements that help customers know which buses are pulling up to the stop.

UTA’s engineers got innovative and decided to use a 3D printer to make their own speaker housing unit that should be able to withstand the cold Utah winters. Source: UTA
